Zen and the Art

tier system from literal and metaphorical bottom to top consists of:

  • ?

  • Artist

  • philosopher

  • critic

  • artist

or in terms more appropo (in the event that this writing has attracted the interest of a layman)

  • ?

  • Doing

  • questioning questioning

  • questioning

  • doing

in the same way that a square can be a rectangle but a rectangle cannot possibly be a square

an artist can be a critic but a critic cannot possibly be an artist.

a child's only brilliance is that he is not yet concerned with external elements, upon being influenced by such elements, his or her ability to externalize the internal becomes greatly diminished in conjunction with his internalization of the external. true brilliance lies in the transcendence of internal or external bias, thus only being concerned with and inspired by the action itself for no other sake.

it should be known that even in questioning, you are doing. and again in questioning questioning. but in Doing, the Doer is only concerned with Doing for the sake of Doing, and the acknowledgment of any of the lower three tiers of activity is no longer necessary, nor (perhaps) possible, as they (lower tiers) have absolutely zero persuasion over any Doing-processes (be it physically, mentally, conceptually, aesthetically, or [any other] ally-ally), other than befuddlement, which is a state of being reserved for critics and philosophers, not Artists and Doers.

keeping the mind regimented and sharp, yet simultaneously untrained and permeable, is to be the maintained state for a(n) Artist or Doer.

this writing can be seen as consistent with some zen writings, for the reason that the structure depicted in the process of reaching enlightenment though zen, is, in my mind, the same to be used to reach any metaphysical state of mind (such as that of the Artist or Doer). It is a metaphor to follow and perhaps eventually deviate from as the individual may see fit. perhaps to see what waits above the fourth tier, such deviation becomes a necessity. perhaps there are more tiers to be mentioned as well. all of this is neither here nor there, it is only the general theoretical outline that would best be adhered to.

none of these writings are to be in any way related to religion, and before you question this proclamation, you should first realize that the 'tier' model is so effective in its ability to stratify that it has surely been manipulated to place the manipulator in a position of hierarchical dominance. such abuse is intolerant, and will never result in true transcendence of the insignificant parameters in which we are all encapsulated.

this is how we chill from 93 til

ever since i was thirteen, my biggest problem was just to find the right road to get to that rainbow that everybody talks about. most people get close enough to count the stripes, but they don't have enough guts to reach out and take that pot of gold.

Scene It

Takashi Murakami is an internationally acclaimed japanese pop-artist who has on multiple occasions combined his creative forces with Louis Vuitton.
The piece above was done by MSK and Seventh Letter Crew over a billboard for Murakami's LA's Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition.

Wooster Collective (www.woostercollective.com) is a blog-based website comprised of the best viewer-submitted images taken from the shadowy, anti-commercialist underworld of street art (gasp!). I look at this site EVERYDAY so check it out for more info on whats going on in the streets near you.

posh spice and i'm sneezin; london so far

London

a tiny portion of St james park

when i got word that i booked the mcqueen lookbook and such in london, i was ecstatic. london is somewhere i've always wanted to go - the cultural diversity, rich history, scenic parks and breathtaking architecture - well i don't really care about that.. the opium scene here is BOMB BRO

just playin. on the real though

my arrival in london was typical of any over european expatriations i've embarked upon. i stumble into the city in a hungry, sleep deprived stupor while trying to cope with totally unfamiliar traffic and social laws on the way to my place to stay. thanks to the lack of a language barrier and a nice taxi dude named paul, i was there from airport to paddington station and to my place within 20 minutes.

i had breakfast with my booker (who is way personable and hospitable), dropped off my gear, and set off to amble around the city, eyes glazed over, ready to explore.

a few things:

the entire place (especially hyde and st james parks) smells flowery compared to the grit of manhattan and the outlying boroughs. people are uncharacteristically nice. i pretty much cut off a girl jogging while being a typical tourist (map accordioned all the way out, not watching where i was going). she said "sorry!" as she passed. unheard of. obviously it was in that sexy little british accent.. i was down to shag. i digress

going to sleep at 3pm and waking up at midnight was an unposh decision in retrospect. jetlag bro. woah.

today i shot the lookbook.. shots turned out great, crew was great, although the shoot was long (11 hours, 22 looks) i still had a good time. catering was sick

i went back to the apartment, grabbed my laptop, and have been sitting at a mcdonalds on oxford in the upstairs room tying up some loose ends on the wireless. two booths next to me two SHIFTY blokes are necking. what a scene

more to come whenever

Good versus Great in Two Thousand Eight

What are the steps required to attain greatness? how many thousands of hours of practice are needed... if any?

People who are good make other people smile, a sign of casual gratification

People who are great make other people question their own progress, go home confused and shattered and excited, and re conceive their preceding philosophies. It is greatness which creates a ripple in the pond of humanity, forcing the population to make intellectual and spiritual bounds .

Which would you rather be?

Are you taking conscious steps toward one or the other?

2008 is the year to put your future into serious consideration
